Saturday June 26th 2021: Luma Arles opening!
“We wanted to evoke the local, from Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ to the soaring rock clusters you find in the region. Its central drum echoes the plan of the Roman amphitheatre.”
Frank Gehry, about the Luma Tower
The Luma Tower will house exhibition galleries, project spaces and the Luma’s research and archive facilities, alongside workshop and seminar rooms.
The surrounding gardens, the public park and the pond were designed by landscape architect Bas Smets. Inspired by the unique landscapes that surround Arles: — the mineral environment of the Alpilles, the wetlands of the Camargue, and the scrubland and steppe of the Crau Plain; — Smets used their different logics and strategies to bring vegetation to the Parc des Ateliers. Trees, shrubs, grasses and ground-covers were introduced, creating a new landscape on the site.
The whole Parc des Ateliers will open its doors to the public on Saturday, June 26th 2021 (provided that the sanitary situation allows it).
